CHILDREN’S BOOK REVIEW AS A WRITER AND A READER
Title: Fine As We Are
Author: Algy Craig Hall
Illustrator: Algy Craig Hall
Genre: Children’s Picture Book
Target Reader: Children ages 3-6, families expecting a new sibling
Have you watched Downton Abbey? Sibling rivalry led to many painful moments between Lady Mary and Lady Edith. There is one scene in Season 6, Episode 8, that I love – where the younger sister, Lady Edith, puts aside all her ill feelings to attend Mary’s (elder sister’s) wedding. Everyone’s amazed, especially Mary, to see Edith participating in the celebration. I loved what Edith said about choosing love over hate and family over rivalry. Edith embraced sisterhood when she said: ‘In the end, you are my sister, and one day only we will remember Sybil, or Mama or Papa…or any of the others who have peopled our youth. Until at last, our shared memories will mean more than our mutual dislike.’
As a second child, I understand the struggle of being overshadowed by an elder sibling. I can relate to Edith’s pain. But I will never understand the conflicting feelings an elder sibling goes through – from being an only child to suddenly sharing the love and attention of all the elders with a tiny human might. It must be unsettling. It can develop insecurities and internal struggles. That’s where parents can help by acknowledging and addressing those emotions.
FINE AS WE ARE is a visually delightful picture book that explores themes of sibling rivalry, acceptance, family love and expression of feelings.
The story is about a Little Frog, who is happy being a single child – until one day, he finds himself with new siblings. The change brings conflicting emotions, something quite normal for children to experience when it comes to sharing the parent, personal space or toys.
WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THIS BOOK
THE CONCEPT OF THE STORY:
There are many books on sibling rivalry, but Fine As We Are addresses this sensitive issue with grace and empathy. It assures children that it’s okay to feel unsure or even upset, but there is joy when the family grows. It beautifully communicates that love is not about receiving; love increases when given to others.
THE TITLE, COVER PAGE AND ILLUSTRATION:
The warm hug depicted on the cover page with the title – Fine As We Are –comforts your heart. The proportion of illustration to text to white space on every page is well-balanced. The illustrations are vibrant and expressive, and the text font size is perfect for children to navigate.
THE EXPRESSION OF FEELINGS:
Little Frog was worried, confused and at times annoyed by the big change. The story validates young children’s emotions and encourages empathy and adaptability. The gentle narrative helps to soften the idea of change and emphasise the positive side of embracing the new.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE.
This book is one of the rare gems where everything is perfect. It’s difficult to point out anything that needs improvement, either as a writer or a reader.
I just love it. The book is a lovely addition to a child’s bookshelf.
