CHILDREN’S PICTURE BOOK REVIEW AS A WRITER AND A READER
Title: Magnet Max
Author & Illustrator: Monica Lozano Hughes
Genre: Children’s Picture Book
Target Reader: 5-9 years
Magnet Max begins by introducing young readers to Max who loves to explore different objects. His curiosity an enthusiasm inspires his friend Nick to explore their surroundings by testing which objects repel or attract. Their journey around the house becomes a playful adventure and hands-on lesson in discovery.
This book by Monica Lozano Hughes is an excellent resource for introducing the concept of magnetic field before conducting a classroom lesson. The illustrations complement the text and reinforce key ideas in a playful way. The story presentation encourages children to explore and it shifts the learning from passive reading to active discovery. The emphasis on the word “explorer” highlights the knowledge gained through experience often leaves lasting impression and helps children to move away from the path of mindless memorization to trial-and-error learning.
On the other hand, the story’s ending feels somewhat abrupt. Max is asked to go back home because his mom has come to collect. Some suggestions to explore or reflect would have closed brought the story to a closure. While storytelling is an engaging way to grab the attention of children, a proper ending would have lifted the book to a higher educational level.
Additionally, the book targets readers between the age of 5-9 but the presentation is best suited for children up to seven. Children in age bracket of 8 and 9 would like to know more about the properties of magnet. They can be introduced with the explanation of magnetic field or magnetic force.
Despite these limitations, Magnet Max generates curiosity and shows that, if things are safe, children can be left to explore their surrounding by themselves. Monica Lozano Hughes, a kindergarten teacher, has devoted her life to teaching. Her passion to educate and share her learnings is visible through this book.

I am an author, teacher, and holistic wellness coach with a deep passion for children’s growth and self-worth. Reviewing children’s books inspired me to write my own picture book, Stand Up for Yourself: Brando Tells Dory.
The story reflects my belief that every child deserves acceptance—not only from others but also from within. Through Dory’s journey of finding her voice and Brando’s support, young readers learn that standing up for themselves and asking for help are powerful acts of self-respect.
At its heart, my work reminds children—and adults alike—that every voice matters, and every child has the right to say, “I matter.”
