CHILDREN’S PICTURE BOOK REVIEW AS A WRITER AND A READER
Title: The Giving Tree
Author & Illustrator: Shel Silverstein
Genre: Children’s Picture Book
Target Reader: 3 year and up
The Giving Tree, written and illustrated by Shel Silversten, is one of the most cherished books of all time. At its heart, it is a story about compassion, selfless giving and the profound role of a provider. That’s why the book is enjoyed even by adults.
The story begins with a young boy who loves to climb the tree, swing from its branches, and play in its shade. As he grows older, he visits the tree less often—returning only when he needs something. Each time, the tree gives selflessly: branches, apples, and even its trunk. Yet, no matter how much it offers, the boy-turned-man never seems fully content. In the end, when the man is old and weary, the tree, reduced to a stump, still finds a way to serve by offering a quiet place to rest.
We all feel miserable from time to time, sometimes life takes over happiness, in those times we need someone dependable, who is ready to listen to us with compassion. The Tree in the book is the consistent provider of care the man needed.
The black and white illustrations add to the book’s simplicity and charm. There is lots of blank space on pages which allows the reader to focus on the images and the story without distractions. Shel Silverstein is known for using black and white illustrations in most of his books. This minimalistic approach of presentation highlights the depth of the message. The focus stays on the two characters – the tree and the man – involved. The author has done an incredible job of telling a story with a deep meaning by using just two characters. As a writer, I know it is one of the toughest jobs to do.
Silverstein’s tale is both tender and thought-provoking. It asks us to reflect on our own capacity to give without expecting anything in return, and to appreciate those—whether people or nature—who give selflessly to us.
I would recommend keeping this book on bedside table to read it frequently to remind ourselves constantly about humility and gratitude.
But on the other hand, the book is probably too sad or emotionally heavy for the kids. The presentation is for children, but the reader’s age indicated as 3 years onwards doesn’t fit right considering the depth of the message.

I am an author, teacher, and holistic wellness coach with a deep passion for children’s growth and self-worth. Reviewing children’s books inspired me to write my own picture book, Stand Up for Yourself: Brando Tells Dory.
The story reflects my belief that every child deserves acceptance—not only from others but also from within. Through Dory’s journey of finding her voice and Brando’s support, young readers learn that standing up for themselves and asking for help are powerful acts of self-respect.
At its heart, my work reminds children—and adults alike—that every voice matters, and every child has the right to say, “I matter.”
