This charming bedtime story is a playful take on Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, tailored for young readers. Edgar, a mischievous young raven, resists bedtime with an amusingly defiant attitude, repeatedly responding with “Nevermore!” to his patient mother’s requests. The book is full of humour, clever nods to Poe’s famous work, and adorable illustrations that make it engaging for both kids and adults.
The book is a creative genius by Jennifer Adams. A dark, bold poem is used as an inspiration to write a light-hearted bedtime story for toddlers. Big cheers to the author!
The simple, repetitive text makes it a fun read-aloud, yet warm illustrations add to its appeal. The book reinforces bedtime routines in a relatable and entertaining way for children.
What I loved:
- Witty homage to Poe’s The Raven
- Adorable and expressive illustrations
- Fun and engaging for both kids and parents
- Great for fans of classic literature and bedtime stories.
- As an author, I loved the bold move of opening the story with a scary sentence.
What didn’t work:
- Young children and many parents may not understand Poe’s references. It’s a lost opportunity for creatively marvellous work.
- The opening sentence – Once upon a midnight dreary – gave me a Gothic feeling As a parent, I would not expect that in children’s books.
Final thoughts:
Perfect for bedtime reading, especially for parents who love literature and want to introduce their little ones to classic themes in a fun, approachable way
